What LUNC is

LUNC is the native coin of Terra Classic, the original Terra blockchain. Until May 2022 the coin was called LUNA and the chain was simply Terra. After the collapse, a new chain took the Terra and LUNA names, and the old one was renamed Terra Classic, with its coin relabelled LUNC, short for Luna Classic. So when people search for "terra luna classic" or "$lunc", they mean the same thing: the coin of the old chain, chain ID columbus-5.

LUNC does three jobs. It pays transaction fees, it is staked to validators who secure the network, and staked LUNC votes on every change to the chain. There is no company issuing it and no inflation minting new coins. The supply only goes one way now, down, through the burn. Our plain-English explainer on what LUNC is goes deeper into the definition, and the LUNC vs LUNA comparison clears up the naming mess.

Two other names travel with LUNC. USTC is the old UST stablecoin, which lost its dollar peg in 2022 and never got it back. LUNA, on most exchanges, is the Terra 2.0 coin, a separate asset on a separate chain. Mixing them up is the most common and most expensive mistake new buyers make, and we come back to it in the trading section. If you just want the number on the screen, the live LUNC price page shows it in your currency.

Under the hood, Terra Classic is a Cosmos SDK chain. It runs terrad v4.1.1 on Cosmos SDK 0.53, supports CosmWasm smart contracts and talks to other Cosmos chains over IBC. One LUNC is split into a million smaller units called uluna, which is why you sometimes see huge raw numbers in explorers.

The 2022 crash in brief

Terra was built around UST, an algorithmic stablecoin meant to hold one dollar by letting users swap one dollar of LUNA for one UST and back. It worked while demand grew. On 7 May 2022 about 150 million UST was pulled from a Curve pool and sold, and UST slipped below a dollar. The Luna Foundation Guard spent around $1.5 billion in reserves defending the peg, and on 9 May UST lost it again.

Then the swap mechanism ran in reverse. Holders redeemed UST for newly minted LUNA and sold it, which pushed LUNA down, which forced even more minting. Total LUNA supply was about 725 million on 7 May. By block 7,790,000 later that month it was about 6.9 trillion. Validators halted the chain twice, on 12 and 13 May, and exchanges froze trading. A coin that had peaked at $119.18 on 5 April 2022 fell to a fraction of a cent.

On 25 May 2022 governance passed prop 1623, the revival plan. A fresh chain, Terra 2.0, started on 28 May with a new LUNA airdropped to old holders. The old chain stayed alive as Terra Classic. Our full Terra Luna crash timeline walks through each day, and the USTC guide covers what happened to the stablecoin itself.

The legal story ended years later. The SEC won a civil judgment of about $4.47 billion against Terraform Labs and Do Kwon in June 2024. Kwon pleaded guilty in New York on 12 August 2025 and was sentenced to 15 years on 11 December 2025 by Judge Paul Engelmayer in the Southern District of New York. Terraform's wind-down trust has logged about 16,640 crypto-loss claims with no payout date announced, and holding LUNC gives you no claim. In Korea, co-founder Daniel Shin was indicted in 2023, but we could not confirm a verdict.

How the community took over

Terraform Labs walked away from the old chain. That left Terra Classic in an unusual spot: a live blockchain, a vast coin supply and no owner. Volunteer developers called Terra Rebels shipped the first big change, the code for the 1.2% burn, distributed through prop 4159 and switched on by prop 4661. The group later split up after disputes, and its core became Hexxagon, which runs Galaxy Station, the main LUNC wallet, and a public explorer.

Since then the pattern has been the same. Someone writes a proposal, posts it for discussion, puts down a deposit and lets staked LUNC decide. Paid developers are hired from the community pool by vote, and some work is paid only after delivery. The core code lives in the classic-terra GitHub organisation, and a handful of independent developers carried the chain through the April 2026 jump to Cosmos SDK 0.53 and the v4.1.1 release in October 2026. The network upgrades page lists every version.

The rules are strict on paper. A proposal needs a 5 million LUNC deposit, voting lasts seven days, 40% of staked LUNC must vote, more than half must say Yes, and a 33.4% NoWithVeto kills it and burns the deposit. All of these are set by governance and can change by vote. In October 2026 holders went further and passed prop 12234, so only governance can now approve new smart-contract code. Read how voting works on our LUNC governance guide, and meet the people and groups behind the revival on the LUNC community page.

Burn tax and burns

The burn is the heart of the LUNC story. Burning means sending coins to a place where nobody can ever spend them, so they leave the supply for good. On Terra Classic most burning happens automatically through an on-chain tax on transfers. The rate is 1.5%, and it is a governance parameter, so holders can vote it up or down again.

Here is how the 1.5% splits. Eighty percent of it, or 1.2 points, is burned. Ten percent, 0.15 points, goes to the community pool that funds development. The other 0.15 points refill the oracle pool, which pays staking rewards. A worked example: if you send 1,000,000 LUNC on-chain, about 15,000 LUNC is taken as tax. Of that, roughly 12,000 LUNC is destroyed, 1,500 goes to the community pool and 1,500 goes to stakers over time. Some addresses, such as certain exchange internal wallets, have been exempted by governance vote.

The rate has moved a lot, and many articles still quote old numbers. This is the real path:

  1. Jun 2022Prop 3568 asks for a 1.2% burnA text proposal only. It signalled what holders wanted but shipped no code.
  2. 21 Sep 20221.2% burn tax goes liveVolunteer code distributed through prop 4159 is switched on by parameter-change prop 4661 and starts burning on taxed on-chain transfers.
  3. Oct 2022Cut to 0.2% (prop 5234)Volume had fled the chain, so the rate dropped less than a month later.
  4. May 2023Raised to 0.5% (prop 11515)Part of a package that also split tax revenue toward staking rewards.
  5. Dec 2023 · Dec 20241.5% attempts rejected (props 11933, 12149)Two earlier tries at 1.5% failed before the idea finally passed.
  6. 2 Aug 20261.5% passes (prop 12223)1.2% burned, 0.15% to the community pool, 0.15% to the oracle pool. It passed narrowly, with 52.6% Yes.

The second burn engine is off-chain. Binance burns LUNC bought with half of the fees it earns on LUNC spot and margin trading, in monthly batches since 2022. By our count of its on-chain batches, the total is more than 87 billion LUNC. That is a Binance policy, not a protocol rule, and it can be late or stop. Our Binance LUNC burn page tracks each batch, and the burn tax guide explains how the tax is charged and which addresses are exempt. To see what has been destroyed so far, open the LUNC burn tracker.

The supply story

LUNC supply peaked at about 6.907 trillion coins after the crash. Since then burns have removed roughly 462 billion, a bit under 7%. Total supply now sits around 6.44 trillion, and the burn meter above shows the live figure. There is no inflation on Terra Classic, so as long as burning continues, the number keeps falling slowly.

Put that pace in perspective. Removing 7% took more than four years, several tax rates and billions of coins from Binance. At the pace so far, halving the supply would take decades. That is why we treat "burn to $1" claims with caution: the $1 market-cap math shows what each price target really requires, and our LUNC price prediction page lets you test your own scenarios instead of trusting someone else's.

You will also see two different supply numbers on data sites. Total supply counts every LUNC on-chain. CoinGecko's circulating supply, around 5.5 trillion, leaves out roughly 0.9 trillion that sits in pools, staking and large holdings, without saying exactly which wallets. Neither is wrong, but never compare one site's total with another's circulating. The LUNC supply guide breaks the gap down.

Staking at about 2%

Staking LUNC means delegating your coins to a validator. You keep ownership, the validator does the work, and you share the rewards. Roughly 14% of all LUNC is staked. Because there is no inflation, rewards are not printed. They come mainly from the oracle pool, which holds about 35 billion LUNC and pays out a small slice every five blocks, plus a share of gas fees.

The honest number is about 2% a year after commission. Our measurements found around 1.9% with a large validator charging 20% commission and about 2.3% with a small one charging 2.5%. Some wallet pages still show 12% or 15%, and those figures do not match the chain. A worked example: 10,000,000 LUNC staked at 2% earns about 200,000 LUNC in a year, before any price movement. The LUNC staking guide walks through the step-by-step flow.

Three rules matter before you stake. Unbonding takes 21 days, during which your coins earn nothing and cannot move. Validators can be slashed, 0.01% for downtime or missed oracle votes and 5% for double-signing, and delegators share the loss. And commission varies: the floor is 2.5%, while the largest validators are pushed up to 20% by a rule that favours smaller ones. There are 88 active validators out of 110 slots, and our validator guide explains how to pick a few and spread your stake.

Wallets and wrapped LUNC

Native LUNC lives at addresses that start with terra1. The wallet most of the community uses is Galaxy Station, built by Hexxagon, which stakes, votes and works with a Ledger through the device's Terra app. Keplr and Cosmostation also hold LUNC, and Keplr stakes through its web dashboard. Trust Wallet stakes too, but ignore its APR display. The old Terra Station is effectively legacy because its Classic backend is down, and Leap shut down on 28 May 2026. Our LUNC wallets guide compares them, and you can check any address on the LUNC explorer page or the community Terra Classic finder.

MetaMask cannot hold native LUNC because Terra Classic has no EVM. What MetaMask can hold is wrapped LUNC, a token on BNB Chain or Ethereum created through the Wormhole bridge. On-chain those tokens are named "LUNA", not "LUNC", which confuses many people. They cannot be staked, and moving them back to Terra Classic through Wormhole is not something we would count on. Newer Hyperlane routes to Ethereum, BNB Chain and Solana came online in 2026 and are still young. The wrapped LUNC guide lists the genuine contract addresses, and how to swap LUNC covers decentralised exchanges.

The scam pattern is simple: anyone can create a token called LUNC. Always check the contract address, never the name, and never type your seed phrase into a website. The DeFi side of the chain is small, with total value locked under a million dollars on DefiLlama, but a few apps like Terraswap Classic, Terraport and Garuda DeFi are live. See the Terra Classic dApps list for what still works.

Where LUNC trades

LUNC is listed on most big global exchanges: Binance, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate, MEXC, Bitget, HTX, Kraken and Crypto.com Exchange, mostly against USDT. Binance also runs a 1000LUNC perpetual future. OKX dropped LUNC in September 2025, Coinbase never listed native LUNC, and Kraken did not delist it in 2025, despite headlines that said so. Binance has paused LUNC withdrawals for wallet maintenance at times, so check the withdrawal status before you buy anywhere. The LUNC exchanges list keeps the full picture.

The ticker trap catches people every week. On Kraken, Bitkub and Bitvavo, "LUNA" is Terra Classic, the coin you want. On Binance, OKX and BtcTurk, "LUNA" is Terra 2.0, which costs roughly a thousand times more per coin. Before you buy, compare the price with the live chart: if the coin costs cents rather than tiny fractions of a cent, you are looking at the wrong asset.

USDT is the real bridge

Outside Türkiye, Thailand and Indonesia, almost every LUNC trade in Asia runs through a USDT pair on a global exchange.

The Asia angle

Asia is where the Terra story began and where much of LUNC's trading still happens. Terraform's co-founders are Korean, the company was registered in Singapore, and the busiest local-currency LUNC market in the world is Binance's LUNC/TRY book. Yet every country treats the coin differently. Our Asia hub compares all eleven markets side by side.

In Türkiye, LUNC/TRY on Binance and Binance TR gives lira holders a direct route, while BtcTurk's "LUNA" is the other coin. In Thailand, licensed Bitkub lists LUNC as LUNA_THB, and Binance TH offers LUNC/USDT; our Bitkub review covers the venue in detail. Indonesia put LUNC on its official tradable-asset list in February 2024, and Indodax runs a thin LUNC/IDR pair, reviewed in our Indodax review.

Elsewhere the road is longer. In South Korea, Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and GOPAX all ended LUNA trading in May and June 2022, and none has listed LUNC since. In Japan, no FSA-registered exchange handles LUNC at all. In Singapore and Hong Kong, no licensed platform we checked lists LUNC, and Hong Kong limits retail buyers to eligible large-cap tokens. The Philippines blocks many offshore exchanges, and Vietnam had not licensed a single crypto exchange when we checked. If you live in one of those places, read your country guide before you move money.

Prices in your currency are a conversion, not a local market. If you want to know what 1 million LUNC is worth in pesos, baht or rupiah, the LUNC converter does the math at live rates.

Risks to weigh

LUNC has already shown how far it can fall, and a 99.99% drawdown is part of its record, not a hypothetical. The risks that remain are quieter but real. Price swings are sharp in both directions: in spring 2026 LUNC nearly tripled in a few weeks, then gave much of it back. Trade volume is modest for a coin this widely known, and exchange support can vanish, as OKX, Korean exchanges and others have shown.

Governance cuts both ways too. The 1.5% tax passed with 52.6% Yes and heavy abstention, so a future vote could change it again. Staking power is concentrated, with six validators holding more than a third of the vote. The developer bench is small, an emergency security patch was needed in September 2026, and the DeFi ecosystem is thin. None of that makes LUNC dead, but it does mean you should size any position as money you can afford to lose. Our LUNC recovery analysis weighs the bull and bear cases, and the LUNC news page follows what changes week to week.

How to start, honestly

For most readers in Asia the cleanest route has three legs: get USDT, move it to an exchange that lists LUNC, then withdraw your LUNC to your own wallet. The buttons on this site open CEX.IO, an exchange running since 2013 that sells USDT by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay after identity verification. It does not list LUNC, so it is only the first leg. In Asia its services come from CEX OVRS LLC in St Kitts and Nevis, which holds no Asian licence, it has no local bank rails, and it is not available in Japan, Singapore or India.

  1. Get USDT

Buy USDT with a card or a local licensed exchange. Card payments in baht, lira or rupiah are converted at your bank’s rate, so expect FX fees.

  2. Send it to a LUNC exchange

Pick a venue from our exchanges list that serves your country. Send a small test amount first and double-check the network.

  3. Buy LUNC, not LUNA

Trade USDT for LUNC. Confirm the ticker against the live price, especially on Bitkub or Kraken where LUNC is called LUNA.

  4. Withdraw to your own wallet

Move LUNC to a terra1 address in Galaxy Station or Keplr. Leave some LUNC for gas, then decide whether to stake.

Our step-by-step guide to buying LUNC covers each leg, with local options for every market. If something here raised a question we did not answer, the LUNC FAQ collects the long tail, from mining to taxes.

FAQ

What is LUNC crypto?

LUNC is the native coin of Terra Classic, the original Terra blockchain (chain ID columbus-5) that collapsed in May 2022. It used to be called LUNA. After the crash a new chain took the LUNA name, and the old coin was renamed LUNC. The chain is now run by its community and validators, with no company behind it.

Is LUNC the same as LUNA?

No. LUNC is Terra Classic and LUNA is Terra 2.0, a separate chain launched on 28 May 2022 with its own supply. There is no swap or bridge between them, and buying LUNC gives no right to LUNA. Watch the tickers: Kraken and Bitkub still list LUNC under the old name LUNA.

What is the LUNC burn tax rate?

The on-chain burn tax is 1.5%, set by proposal 12223, which passed on 2 August 2026. Of that, 1.2% is burned, 0.15% goes to the community pool and 0.15% to the oracle pool that pays stakers. Governance can change the rate again by vote.

Where can I buy LUNC?

LUNC trades on Binance, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate, MEXC, Bitget, Kraken and Crypto.com Exchange, mostly against USDT. Local-currency pairs exist in Turkish lira, Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah. There is no pair in won, yen, peso, ringgit, Singapore dollars, Hong Kong dollars, Taiwan dollars or dong, so most Asian buyers go through USDT.

Where to stake LUNC and how much does it pay?

You can stake native LUNC from Galaxy Station, Keplr or Trust Wallet by delegating to a validator. Measured rewards run at roughly 2% per year after commission, not the 12–15% some wallet pages show. Unstaking takes 21 days, and your coins earn nothing during that time.

Can I send LUNC to MetaMask?

Not native LUNC. Terra Classic has no EVM, and native addresses start with terra1, so MetaMask cannot hold them. MetaMask can only hold wrapped LUNC tokens on BNB Chain or Ethereum, which cannot be staked and should be checked by contract address, never by name.
