Why Hong Kong is different for LUNC
Of the markets we compared in this part of Asia, Hong Kong has the most explicit gate for retail crypto. Retail investors may trade only on platforms licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission, and those platforms may offer retail clients only “eligible large-cap” tokens. Terra Classic is not on any licensed platform we could check. So the coin that Hong Kong readers search for as “lunc幣” lives entirely outside the SFC system.
That creates a gap between what people search for and what the rules allow. Local searches name Binance (“幣安lunc”), Bybit and Crypto.com, and ask about LUNC’s market cap and the burn. None of those exchanges is an SFC licensee. This guide explains the licensing system, checks the licensed list against LUNC, and sets out the honest options, including where the risks sit.
SFC licensing and the retail token rule
The SFC licenses virtual asset trading platforms, or VATPs, under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Ordinance and the Securities and Futures Ordinance. Its public list separates licensed platforms from applicants, and its message to investors is direct: trade virtual assets only on SFC-licensed platforms. The list also flags look-alike scam websites through the SFC Alert List, which is worth checking before you type a password anywhere.
For retail clients, a licensed platform may offer only eligible large-cap virtual assets. In short, a token must be included in at least two acceptable indices from at least two independent index providers, with at least one provider that meets IOSCO standards and has experience with conventional securities indices. A track record and due diligence come on top. A 2025 SFC circular relaxed the track-record rule, but only for professional investors and for HKMA-licensed stablecoins.
Would LUNC pass that test? We did not check index membership, so this is our inference rather than a verified fact. Given its collapse history and a market cap in the low hundreds of millions of dollars, we think it is very unlikely that LUNC would qualify as an eligible large-cap asset for retail. Even if a licensed platform wanted to list it for professionals, retail access would be a separate hurdle.
The 13 licensed platforms and LUNC
When we checked the SFC list of platforms (the page was dated 16 October 2026), it named 13 licensed VATPs. We read HashKey Exchange’s public market list directly: 38 symbols, including majors such as SOL, XRP, DOGE, LINK and AVAX, but no LUNC. OSL and Bullish are tracked by CoinGecko, and neither has a LUNC market. The other ten were not checked one by one, but none of them appears among the exchanges that CoinGecko lists for Terra Classic.

There is also no LUNC/HKD pair on any exchange in the world. The fiat pairs that exist for LUNC are in Turkish lira, Thai baht, Indonesian rupiah, US dollars and euros. Everything a Hong Kong user sees in HKD is a conversion from USDT markets.
Applicants are not licensees
The SFC list has a second section for applicants, and this is where confusion starts. In the version we read, five names sat there: HighBlock (bitV), Crypto.com (Foris DAX HK), WhaleFin, Nebulas and Bybit (Spark Fintech). Crypto.com and WhaleFin carry a mark meaning “deemed to be licensed” while the application is processed, and WhaleFin is also marked as having ceased operating a platform. None of the five is a licensed VATP.
This matters for LUNC because two of the names people associate with it are on that list. Bybit runs a LUNC/USDT spot market and a 1000LUNC perpetual globally. The Crypto.com Exchange lists LUNC/USD and a LUNC perpetual globally. Neither fact makes those listings SFC-approved for Hong Kong retail clients. Binance, the biggest LUNC venue, does not appear on the SFC list at all.
LUNC market cap and the HKD price
“lunc 市值” is one of the more common local searches. Market cap is price multiplied by circulating supply, and here LUNC needs a footnote. Total on-chain supply is roughly 6.44 trillion LUNC, but aggregators such as CoinGecko count a circulating supply of around 5.5 trillion, because they leave out pools, staked coins and some large holders. That is why price times total supply gives a bigger number than the market cap you see quoted. Our LUNC supply guide explains which wallets make up the difference.
In round terms, LUNC’s market cap has sat in the low hundreds of millions of US dollars, a small fraction of what LUNA was worth before the May 2022 crash. The live board at the top of this page shows price, market cap and volume in HKD, and the LUNC price page adds the chart. A labeled example: if LUNC were HK$0.0003, then HK$3,000 would buy about 10 million LUNC before fees, and 1 million LUNC would be worth HK$300.
幣安 LUNC: the Binance angle
Binance is where most LUNC liquidity lives. It runs LUNC/USDT, LUNC/USDC and LUNC/TRY spot markets plus a 1000LUNCUSDT perpetual, and it burns LUNC from its trading fees in monthly batches. A recent batch was 334.88 million LUNC on 1 October 2026, for a cumulative total of more than 87 billion by on-chain count. The Binance LUNC burn page keeps the record.
For a Hong Kong resident, the key point is that Binance is not SFC-licensed and not an applicant. Using it means accepting offshore risk: no SFC oversight, no local dispute process and no HKD bank rail. Binance’s LUNC withdrawals were also paused for “wallet maintenance” when we last checked, so confirm that you can withdraw before you buy. The rest of the burn story, including the 1.5% on-chain tax set by proposal 12223, lives on our burn tracker.
FPS, P2P and card routes
Licensed platforms such as HashKey and OSL take HKD via FPS, eDDA and bank transfer, and some bank apps offer crypto through HashKey. Those are good rails, but none of them reaches LUNC. You can buy USDT on a licensed platform, but whether you may withdraw it to an offshore exchange depends on that platform’s rules, so read them first.
Outside the licensed system, Binance P2P in HKD (with FPS, PayMe and bank labels) and walk-in OTC shops exist. A bill to license virtual asset dealing and OTC services was due to go to the Legislative Council by the end of 2026, so these channels sit outside VA-specific licensing for now. The risks are concrete: a counterparty’s tainted funds can freeze your bank account, and moving money for others can count as a money-mule offense.
Card buyers have another option. CEX.IO accepts Hong Kong residents through CEX OVRS LLC, a company registered in St Kitts and Nevis that holds no Hong Kong or other Asian license. There is no FPS or HKD bank rail; a Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay payment is converted at your bank’s rate. CEX.IO does not list LUNC, so it can only provide USDT or BTC for the next step.
Get USDT first, then find a LUNC market
Buy USDT by card, move it to an exchange that lists LUNC, and withdraw to your own wallet. The exchange behind this button does not trade LUNC and holds no SFC license.
Tax basics for Hong Kong holders
Hong Kong has no capital gains tax, and that applies to crypto too. Profits become taxable under profits tax only if they arise from a trade or business carried on in Hong Kong. The Inland Revenue Department looks at the usual “badges of trade”: how often you trade, how long you hold, how you fund it and whether it looks like a business. DIPN 39 sets out the department’s approach to digital assets.
For most people holding a small LUNC bag, that means no tax on a sale. Frequent trading, leverage or running it like a business changes the picture. Keep records of what you paid and received, in HKD terms, in case you ever need to show your pattern of activity.
Check the licenseIf you still want LUNC
Some readers will decide the offshore risk is acceptable for a small position. If that is you, keep the chain of custody short and end with the coins in your own wallet, not on an exchange.
The usual route from HKD
Before you press buy
- The platform is named on the SFC list, or you accept that it is not
- LUNC withdrawals are open on the exchange you pick
- The ticker is LUNC, or “LUNA” on Kraken; on Binance “LUNA” is Terra 2.0
- You have a native Terra Classic wallet ready, such as Galaxy Station or Keplr
- The amount is money you can afford to lose
Our wallets guide covers self-custody, and how to buy LUNC walks through each step in more detail. The LUNC exchange list shows which global venues still trade it. For a regional view, compare Taiwan, where no FSC-registered exchange lists LUNC, Singapore, with its strict MAS regime, and Vietnam, or browse all 11 markets on the Asia hub.
Our take on LUNC in Hong Kong
FAQ
Can I buy LUNC on HashKey or OSL?
No. HashKey Exchange’s public symbol list has 38 markets and none is LUNC, and neither OSL nor Bullish shows a LUNC market on CoinGecko. None of the 13 SFC-licensed platforms appears among the exchanges that list Terra Classic.
Is LUNC legal to hold in Hong Kong?
The SFC regime licenses the platforms, and it urges investors to trade virtual assets only on SFC-licensed platforms. LUNC is not available on any of them, so anyone in Hong Kong who buys it does so offshore, outside SFC protection. If you already hold LUNC, keeping it in your own wallet is the lower-risk option.
Are Binance, Bybit or Crypto.com licensed in Hong Kong?
Binance is not on the SFC list at all. Bybit and Crypto.com appear only as applicants, with Crypto.com marked as deemed to be licensed while its application is processed. Neither is one of the 13 licensed platforms, so do not treat them as SFC-licensed.
What is the LUNC market cap (lunc 市值)?
LUNC’s market cap has been in the low hundreds of millions of US dollars, a small fraction of its 2022 peak. Market cap is price times the circulating supply that aggregators count, which leaves out some pools and large wallets, so it is lower than price times total supply. Our live price page shows the up-to-date figure in HKD.
Do I pay tax on LUNC profits in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong has no capital gains tax. Crypto profits become taxable under profits tax only if they come from a trade or business carried on in Hong Kong, judged by the usual badges of trade. The Inland Revenue Department’s DIPN 39 explains the approach.
