How LUNC staking really works, and how to start

Delegating LUNC to a validator pays roughly 2% a year after commission, not the 12–15% some wallets display. Coins take 21 days to unbond, and the rewards come from an oracle pool and fees rather than inflation.

LUNC staking means delegating your Terra Classic coins to a validator, the operators who produce blocks and vote on prices for the chain. You keep ownership, the coins never leave your wallet’s control, and in return you receive a share of the rewards the network pays out. Our on-chain measurement puts the net return at roughly 2% a year, between about 1.9% and 2.3% depending on the validator’s commission.

That number disappoints people who saw 12% or 15% in a wallet app. The lower figure is the true one, and this guide explains why: where rewards come from, how to stake step by step, which exchange offers are worth ignoring, and what can go wrong. The calculator in the hero is preset to 2%, so you can plug in your own balance and see a realistic year.

What LUNC staking really pays

We measured rewards directly from the chain by reading delegators’ pending rewards at two block heights about 50,000 blocks apart, using only wallets that did not withdraw in between. Delegators with Allnodes, a large validator charging the 20% maximum commission, earned about 1.87% a year. Delegators with Classic Nodes, at the 2.5% floor, earned about 2.28%. Both point to a gross rate, before commission, of about 2.3%.

A simple supply-side check agrees. The oracle reward pool pays out about 3,700 LUNC per block, which adds up to roughly 20 billion LUNC a year. Spread across the roughly 900 billion LUNC that is bonded, that is about 2.2% from oracle rewards alone, with fees adding a little on top. Third-party dashboards such as StatsBin show figures in the same family, near 3%. Anything in double digits does not match the chain.

Roughly 14% of the total LUNC supply is staked. That ratio matters, because the reward pot is shared: if more people stake, each delegator gets a thinner slice, and if stakers leave, the slice grows.

Where the rewards come from

Terra Classic mints nothing new. Mint inflation is set to zero, so staking rewards are not freshly printed coins. They come from three places, and understanding them explains why the APR is low and why it drifts.

The main source is the oracle reward pool, a module account that held about 35 billion LUNC in our check. Every five-block vote period it releases a tiny fraction of its balance, about one 9.4-millionth per block, to validators whose price votes fall inside the accepted band. Those payouts skip the 50% community tax, though the validator still takes its commission before passing the rest to delegators.

The second source is gas fees. They go to the fee collector, and the distribution module sends half to the community pool (the community tax is 50%) and the rest to validators and delegators. In practice this is a small share of what you earn.

The third piece refills the oracle pool. Of the 1.5% burn tax, about 80% is burned and roughly 10% each goes to the community pool and the oracle pool. Over one recent stretch of 100,000 blocks the pool paid out about 373 million LUNC but took in only about 74 million, so it shrank. If on-chain activity stays where it is, the pool slowly gets smaller and the APR follows it down. More taxed volume, a governance top-up or fewer stakers would push it back up. All these rates are set by governance and can change by vote.

Why wallets show 12–15%

Trust Wallet’s Terra Classic staking page displays “APR 15.00%”. Atomic Wallet’s headline promises 12%, while another part of the same page mentions about 4%. These figures look like leftovers from the days before the 2022 collapse, or placeholders that nobody updated after inflation went to zero and the reward model changed.

Staking through those wallets is still genuine on-chain delegation, so the coins are safe to stake there. You simply earn the network rate, not the advertised one. If you delegate 1,000,000 LUNC expecting 150,000 LUNC in a year, you will receive something closer to 20,000–23,000 LUNC. Plan with 2%, and treat any higher number as a bonus you did not count on.

Do the math with 2%

A realistic plan uses about 2% a year after commission. The hero calculator starts there, so 1,000,000 LUNC shows roughly 20,000 LUNC of yearly rewards before compounding.

How to stake LUNC in Galaxy Station

Galaxy Station, built by Hexxagon, is the de facto successor to Terra Station for Terra Classic. The old Terra Station still opens, but its Classic network points to a backend that is down, so staking there often fails unless you configure a custom node. If your coins sit in Terra Station, import the same 24-word seed into Galaxy Station and carry on. Our LUNC wallets guide covers Keplr, Ledger and the rest.

  1. Install Galaxy Station

Add the Galaxy Station extension in Chrome or Brave (it does not run in Firefox), or pair the mobile app through WalletConnect. Create a new wallet or import an existing 24-word Station seed.

  2. Fund the wallet with native LUNC

Withdraw LUNC from an exchange on the native Terra Classic network to your terra1 address; your own wallet needs no memo. Leave a little LUNC unstaked for gas.

  3. Open Stake on Terra Classic

Connect the wallet to the Galaxy Station web app, select the Terra Classic network and open the Stake tab. Click Stake next to LUNC.

  4. Pick a validator

Choose Auto-stake, which picks a validator charging under 5% commission outside the top 30% by voting power, or choose Manual Stake and select a validator yourself.

  5. Enter the amount and post

Type the amount, press Confirm, then Post and approve the transaction. Your stake starts earning from the next blocks and shows under My Staked Assets.

  6. Claim, redelegate or undelegate later

Use Claim all rewards to collect earnings. Use Manage to redelegate instantly to another validator, or to undelegate, which locks the coins for 21 days.

The web app lives at station.terraclassic.community, and the official Galaxy Station staking docs show the same flow with screenshots. Keplr users stake through the Keplr Dashboard’s Terra Classic page; Ledger owners need the Terra and Cosmos apps on the device and connect through Galaxy Station or Keplr. Trust Wallet users go to Earn, choose Terra Classic, enter an amount and pick a validator. Whatever the wallet, check your stake afterwards in the LUNC explorer by pasting your terra1 address.

Choosing the validator is the one decision that really matters. A reliable operator with modest commission and a sensible share of voting power earns you the most and helps decentralize the chain. Our validator guide explains how dynamic commission works and which red flags to watch for, such as monikers that promise 0% fees while charging 5% or more on-chain.

Where to stake LUNC: wallets vs exchange earn

People search for LUNC staking on Binance, Kraken, KuCoin and Crypto.com, hoping for a one-click option. The exchanges’ own products tell a different story. Native delegation from your own wallet beats every custodial offer we found, usually by a wide margin.

Binance’s flexible product paid about 0.0115% a year when we checked. On 1,000,000 LUNC that is around 115 LUNC a year, against roughly 20,000 LUNC from native staking. Binance also had LUNC withdrawals disabled during our check, so if you plan to move coins off an exchange to stake them, confirm the withdrawal status before you buy. Our LUNC exchanges list tracks which venues still trade the coin and our buying guide walks through the full route.

Kraken trades LUNC under the old ticker LUNA but states plainly that it does not offer rewards on Terra Classic. Gate lists LUNC in its lending product, where you lend coins to traders rather than stake them. Any venue that advertises high LUNC yields is either lending your coins out or quoting a number that the chain cannot support. Wrapped LUNC on BNB Chain or Ethereum cannot be staked at all; see wrapped LUNC for why.

Unbonding and redelegation

Unbonding takes 21 days. When you undelegate, the coins stop earning straight away and stay locked until the period ends; you cannot sell or transfer them in between. If the price jumps or crashes during those three weeks, you watch from the sidelines. That is the real cost of staking, more than the modest yield.

Redelegation is the escape hatch. Moving stake from one validator to another is instant and keeps earning, which is how you leave a validator that gets jailed or raises its commission. The catch: the same validator pair then has a 21-day cooldown, and the chain allows at most seven pending entries per pair. Both the 21-day period and these limits are governance parameters and could change by vote.

Staking also gives you a voice. Bonded LUNC is the only LUNC that votes, and if you do not vote yourself, your validator votes for you. You can override that vote on any proposal; our governance guide shows how.

Slashing and other risks

Slashing is the protocol’s penalty for a misbehaving validator, and delegators share it in proportion to their stake. On Terra Classic the penalties are mild for downtime and serious for double-signing.

A validator must sign at least 85% of blocks in a rolling window of 100,800 blocks. Missing more than about a day’s worth triggers a 0.01% slash and a 30-minute jail. Oracle duty has its own rule: a validator with fewer than 75% valid price votes in the same-sized window is slashed 0.01% and jailed. Double-signing, which usually means a badly run backup node, costs 5%. On a 1,000,000 LUNC delegation, a downtime slash costs about 100 LUNC, while a double-sign costs about 50,000.

The other risks sit outside the staking module. Price risk dominates: a 2% yield is wiped out by a small move in a volatile coin. Custody risk applies when you leave coins on an exchange. Phishing is the most common way people lose staked LUNC, through fake wallet sites and support agents asking for a seed phrase. Liquid staking protocols such as Eris exist on Terra Classic, but they are small and add smart-contract risk on top.

Claiming and compounding

Rewards accrue every block but are not added to your stake automatically. You claim them, then delegate them again to compound. Some validators, such as ones with “auto-compound” in the name, run services that restake for you; check the on-chain commission before trusting the label.

Compounding at 2% barely moves the needle. If you stake 1,000,000 LUNC at 2.2% and never claim, you end the year with about 22,000 LUNC of rewards. Claiming and restaking monthly lifts that to about 22,200. Every claim costs gas, so for small balances, claiming every month or quarter makes more sense than daily. Keep a small LUNC buffer unstaked for fees; and note that the chain’s burn tax can apply to transfers, which is part of how the network keeps feeding the burn tracker.

FAQ

What is the real LUNC staking APR?

Measured on-chain, native LUNC staking pays roughly 2% a year after validator commission, with a gross rate a little above that. The rate is variable because rewards come from a shrinking oracle pool and from fees, not from inflation. Dashboards that read the chain land in the 2–3% range.

Why does Trust Wallet show 15% APR for LUNC staking?

The 15% shown on the Trust Wallet staking page, and the 12% headline on Atomic Wallet, do not match what the chain pays. Staking through those wallets is real on-chain delegation, so you earn the normal network rate of around 2%, not the advertised figure.

Can I stake LUNC on Binance?

Binance offers LUNC only in Simple Earn Flexible, which showed about 0.01% a year when we checked. That is not native staking and earns roughly two hundred times less than delegating from your own wallet. Kraken and OKX offer no LUNC rewards at all.

How long does it take to unstake LUNC?

Undelegating takes 21 days. During that time the coins earn nothing and cannot be moved or sold. Redelegating to another validator is instant, but that pair then has a 21-day cooldown before you can move the same stake again.

Can you lose LUNC by staking?

Yes, but the protocol risk is small with a reliable validator. A validator that goes offline or misses too many oracle votes is slashed 0.01% and jailed, and a double-signing validator loses 5%, shared by its delegators. The bigger risk is price: staked LUNC is locked for 21 days if you decide to exit.

What is the best place to stake LUNC?

For most people the best place is a non-custodial wallet such as Galaxy Station or Keplr, delegating to a reliable validator outside the largest few. You keep your keys, earn the full network rate and keep your governance vote. Exchange earn products pay far less.
