This page collects the small questions about LUNC that keep coming up in search and in chats. Each answer is short and sticks to what we could check on-chain or in official sources. Where a fact could not be confirmed, we say so instead of guessing.
For the big topics, we link out. Price lives on our live price page, the definition of the token on what is LUNC, and the long-run debate on will LUNC recover. Everything else is below, grouped by theme.
Name, ticker and meaning
What does LUNC stand for? LUNC means Luna Classic. Until May 2022 the coin was simply called LUNA, the native token of the Terra blockchain. After the UST collapse, governance proposal 1623 launched a new chain, Terra 2.0, which took the LUNA name. The original chain became Terra Classic, its coin became LUNC, and the old UST stablecoin became USTC. “Luna” is the Latin word for the moon, which is why so much of the community’s imagery is lunar.
Is the ticker always LUNC? No, and this catches many buyers. Kraken, Bitkub and Bitvavo still list Terra Classic under the old ticker LUNA. On Binance, OKX and BtcTurk, by contrast, LUNA means the Terra 2.0 coin. Always check the coin’s full name and price before you place an order. Terra 2.0 costs hundreds of times more per coin than LUNC, so a quick price check exposes the mix-up. Our LUNC vs LUNA comparison covers the differences, and our exchange list shows which ticker each venue uses.
Why does CoinGecko call it “terra-luna”? Data sites kept the original page and history for the old chain, so LUNC inherited the pre-crash listing, including its all-time high of $119.18 from April 2022. That high belongs to the old LUNA era, before supply ballooned to about 6.9 trillion coins.
The LUNC logo: official vs fan versions
There is no official LUNC brand kit, because no company or foundation owns Terra Classic. The icon you see on CoinGecko and on community hubs such as terra-classic.io is the one most people recognize. Beyond that, you will find many fan versions: burning moons, lion and dragon mascots, gold coins with the LUNC letters.
Fan logos are fine for memes and avatars. They are not a sign of authenticity. A token can carry a perfect logo and still be a fake contract, so never use an icon to decide whether something is genuine. Check the chain, the denom or the contract address instead.
Can you mine LUNC?
No. Terra Classic runs on the Cosmos SDK with proof-of-stake consensus, so there are no miners and no hash power. Blocks are produced by validators chosen according to how much LUNC is staked with them. Mint inflation is set to zero, which means no new LUNC is created by block production at all.
The closest thing to mining is staking. You delegate LUNC to a validator, and rewards come mainly from the oracle reward pool, which is topped up by part of the burn tax, plus a share of gas fees. Measured returns are around 2% a year after typical validator fees, far below the 12% to 15% some wallets still display. Our staking guide walks through it, and the validator guide explains how to run a node, which is the only “hardware” route.
Any app, cloud contract or Telegram bot that sells “LUNC mining” is selling something that cannot exist on this chain. Treat it as a scam.
Chain ID, decimals and contract addresses
Developers and wallet users regularly need the same few technical facts. Here they are in one place. They come from on-chain parameters and the public chain registry.
Terra Classic technical basics
- Chain ID
- columbus-5
- Base denom
- uluna (1 LUNC = 1,000,000 uluna)
- Decimals
- 6
- Address prefix
- terra1…
- Coin type
- 330 (118 as an alternative in Keplr)
- Wrapped LUNC on BNB Chain (Wormhole, symbol LUNA)
- 0x156ab3346823B651294766e23e6Cf87254d68962
So what is “the LUNC contract address”? Native LUNC does not have one. It is the base coin of columbus-5, just as ETH has no contract on Ethereum. When someone asks for a LUNC contract, they usually mean a wrapped token on another chain. The best-known is the Wormhole token on BNB Chain shown above. Its on-chain name and symbol are “LUNA”, not “LUNC”, and it is not a “Binance-Peg” token. Ethereum and Solana versions exist too, and they are listed with full warnings on our wrapped LUNC page.
Wrapped tokens cannot be staked, cannot vote and cannot reliably be bridged back to Terra Classic, because the old Shuttle and Wormhole routes stopped. MetaMask can hold the wrapped versions, but not native LUNC, because Terra Classic has no EVM.
Want native LUNC in your own wallet?
The usual route: buy USDT by card, send it to an exchange that lists LUNC, buy there and withdraw to a terra1 address. Check the exchange’s LUNC withdrawal status first.
How many LUNC holders are there?
We could not verify a holder count, and we do not think anyone can give a precise one. Terra Classic does not publish a “holders” figure the way some token trackers do for Ethereum tokens. Explorers that try to count addresses use different methods, and many active traders never hold LUNC on-chain at all: their coins sit in a handful of exchange wallets.
What can be measured tells a partial story. Roughly 14% of the total supply is staked with validators, and the gap of more than 900 billion LUNC between total and circulating supply on data sites shows how much sits in pools and large wallets. For one older reference point, South Korean prosecutors estimated about 100,000 domestic LUNA holders lost money in the 2022 collapse. That is a historical estimate for one country, not a live count. Live supply figures are on our supply page.
Is LUNC halal?
We found no Shariah ruling that addresses LUNC specifically, so we cannot call it halal or haram. The most cited general view comes from Malaysia. In 2020, the Shariah Advisory Council of the Securities Commission Malaysia resolved that trading digital assets is permissible in principle when done on SC-registered digital asset exchanges, while some activities remain non-compliant.
That general view does not settle LUNC. No SC-registered exchange lists LUNC and there is no LUNC/MYR pair, so Malaysian buyers have to go offshore. Scholars may also look separately at staking rewards, leveraged products and the speculative character of the token. If this matters to you, ask a qualified scholar and read our Malaysia guide and Indonesia guide for the local rules.
Is LUNC a security?
No regulator in our research has formally classified LUNC itself. The closest legal history concerns Terraform Labs. In the US, a jury found Terraform Labs and Do Kwon liable in the SEC’s civil fraud case in April 2024, and the final judgment came to about $4.47 billion. In a separate criminal case, Kwon pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in December 2025.
South Korea went the other way on one point. In 2025 its Supreme Court held that LUNA and UST were not “financial investment products” under the Capital Markets Act, while the fraud charges continued. Terra Classic itself has no issuer, no company and no foundation since the crash, which changes the picture again. How LUNC is treated where you live depends on local law; the full legal story is on our crash page, and the SEC’s release is on sec.gov.
Do you pay tax on LUNC?
There are two separate “taxes” people mix up. The first is the on-chain burn tax: 1.5% on taxable transfers since proposal 12223, of which about 80% is burned. It is a protocol rule that governance can change by vote, and our burn tax guide explains it. The second is the income or transaction tax your government charges on crypto gains. That depends entirely on where you live.
Burn tax is not income tax
The 1.5% burn tax is collected by the chain. Income tax on LUNC gains is collected by your government, under local rules.
| Market | How crypto gains are treated |
|---|---|
| Japan | Miscellaneous income, progressive up to about 55% |
| South Korea | 22% above ₩2.5M scheduled from 1 Jan 2027; deferral debated |
| Thailand | Individuals exempt 2025–2029 via SEC-licensed venues only |
| Indonesia | 0.21% final tax on domestic platforms, 1% on foreign ones |
| Vietnam | 0.1% on each transfer via licensed providers |
| Philippines | Ordinary income, graduated 0–35% |
| Malaysia | No capital gains tax for individuals; trading as a business is taxable |
| Singapore | Investment gains generally not taxed; trading as a business is |
| Hong Kong | No capital gains tax; profits tax if it is a trade |
| Taiwan | Property-transaction income in comprehensive income |
| Turkey | No crypto-specific tax; a 2026 proposal was withdrawn |
Safety basics every LUNC holder should know
Which wallet? Galaxy Station, built by Hexxagon, is the practical successor to Terra Station, whose Classic mode points to a node that no longer works. Keplr and Ledger (through a companion wallet) also work. Leap shut down on 28 May 2026, so do not install it. Details are on our wallet guide.
Can I swap LUNC into LUNA? No. There is no swap or bridge between the two chains, and the 2022 LUNA airdrop was a one-time event. Anyone offering a “LUNC to LUNA conversion” is running a scam.
Before you buy on an exchange, check that LUNC withdrawals are open. Binance had them disabled for “wallet maintenance” when last checked. Our buying guide covers the full route and its pitfalls.

Can you mine LUNC?
No. Terra Classic is a proof-of-stake chain, so there is no mining and mint inflation is set to zero. New blocks come from validators, and holders earn by staking LUNC with a validator, which pays roughly 2% a year net.
Is LUNC halal?
We found no Shariah ruling specific to LUNC. In 2020 the Shariah Advisory Council of the Securities Commission Malaysia said trading digital assets on SC-registered exchanges is permissible in principle, but no SC-registered exchange lists LUNC. Ask a qualified scholar about your own situation.
How many LUNC holders are there?
There is no reliable public figure. Terra Classic does not publish a holder count, explorers count addresses differently, and a large share of LUNC sits on exchanges under a few addresses. Any precise number you see online could not be verified.
What does LUNC stand for?
LUNC stands for Luna Classic, the token of Terra Classic. It was called LUNA until May 2022, when a new chain took the LUNA name and the original coin was renamed. Some exchanges still list LUNC under the old LUNA ticker.
What is the LUNC contract address?
Native LUNC has no contract address. It is the base coin of the columbus-5 chain with the denom uluna. Contract addresses exist only for wrapped versions on other chains, such as the Wormhole token on BNB Chain, whose on-chain symbol is LUNA.
Is LUNC a security?
No regulator in our research has issued a ruling that classifies LUNC specifically. The US SEC won a civil fraud case against Terraform Labs and Do Kwon in 2024, and South Korea’s Supreme Court said in 2025 that LUNA and UST are not financial investment products under its capital markets law.
